Another visit to paradise...

The morning after our recent snowfall of a couple inches, I detoured to my little piece of paradise - carefully, in case the road was still snow covered and impassable (there's a hill leading down to the water.)  Fortunately, it was clear, so I could drive down without concern.

In  the following picture, there is some snow, and yes, the water is high...because it's high tide:

Here's a view across the inlet:

When I first drove in, lo and behold, there was already a car parked there!  (That was a first!)  An elderly gentleman was sitting in the driver's seat, enjoying his morning coffee alone in the car, and he greeted me "good morning, Ma'am."  I responded in kind, and went on about my business taking pictures.  No issues, no problems.  (However I did sense that he looked me over fairly thoroughly...)

It's nice to know that someone else has good taste in serene locations!

One of my readers observed in a recent comment that, in winter, cis-women (other than those in NYC) tend to dress in pants or leggings and tops (or a dress serving as a top.)   Following is a picture of one of my everyday outfits.  This is what I typically wear - various turtleneck tunics, stirrup leggings (in warmer weather, capris) and pantyhose or tights, with flats.  Absolutely nothing from the men's department.  And if my January trip actually comes to pass, it will be made wearing everyday outfits just like this:

However, I still plan to take one (1) skirt - just in case the opportunity to fully-dress arrives.  Unfortunately, space in my suitcase dictates ONLY ONE.    :-(     Initially, I thought I might take my mid-calf denim skirt (with flats instead of Mary Janes - which unfortunately don't fit well enough to wear all day while traveling):

But now, I'm "waffling" on that choice....so it may be this knee-length denim skirt - which you've seen in posts several times previously:

Or this red one - again, with flats for traveling:

IMHO, the front runner right now is my knee-length denim skirt.  A close second in line is the above red one.  Anyone care to offer suggestions or thoughts about my selections, or share any other thoughts on "What should I wear?"

Your ideas are welcomed...and I could be convinced to change my mind!  (Before you ask, yes, I still have that jumper dress I wore on an excursion a couple of months ago!)

  1. My favorite would be the red skirt with the Mary Janes
I always find that when traveling there is often room for 'one more thing'. Bulkiness in packing for travel can be cut down based on the weight of the fabric. Most of my girl clothes are very thin material and do not take up too much room.

    1. Thanks, Pat. I like the red one, too... And it may well be the one I choose...once I try it on to make sure it fits right - haven't done that in a while. That'll happen right after New Year's Day...

The only shoe problem is that my MJ's aren't comfortable enough for a long day traveling. They're fine for dinner, or a trip to the store. There won't be enough room in the suitcase to put them, if I can't wear them enroute both ways...basically 3 days each way. So it may have to be "flats" - whether I like it or not.

Will let you know what happens!

  2. As you know my wife prefers not to fly. I think the last time she was on a plan was during the administration of George H.W. Bush. Wherever we go we have the car. That is important since neither of us could pack for a trip that did not included the car. We take her Volvo wagon which has some room but I am thinking of getting a car-top carrier to put on top of the Volvo to increase our room. I cannot get a clear answer from AMTRAK as to whether cars with such carriers are permitted on the Auto Train. With the car-top carrier I can take my golf clubs and as many shoes as I want.

    1. A rooftop carrier is an interesting concept. But absent a definitive answer from Amtrak in writing, it might be fraught with problems. And even with a letter in your hand, a personnel change up the "food chain" from the signer, could cause a denied boarding, and cost you your fare unless you abandon the carrier.

Maybe get a bigger car, like a standard 7 passenger Minivan? That was what we rented for the wedding. There certainly was plenty of room with the back seat folded down - even for golf clubs. The only downside was - the sheet metal was very thin and flimsy (don't lean on it - it oilcans, but pops back with a loud bang) and it only got about 24 mpg on flat road, 22 in the mountains, and 17 around town...we're used to 36+ on the road and 32 in town. So it seemed that all we were doing was filling up...

Or you could rent one for the trip south (even though you do Auto Train.) And watch their faces when you return it at the car rental place, with only a few hundred miles on it...that would be a real photo-op!

I know what you mean about taking "as many shoes as I want." In our family, I pack like the girl...and maybe look a bit like one, too!
